Malika was formed when I was already playing with Hermeto Pascoal. Together with my brother Lelo, and Hector Costita, Luiz Roberto Oliveira, Olivier Jolles, Jorge Oscar, and Mauro Herrero, we developed an original repertoire that encompassed some rhythms of the Argentine folklore such as the "Chacarera," a lot of percussion, electronic music, and free jazz. The group played some concerts at the Teatro Itália, in São Paulo, in sessions on Mondays at midnight, a space reserved for this kind of instrumental, underground music, which almost didn’t exist in Brazil.
ON THE PRESS
MALIKA PREMIERES AT THE TEATRO ITÁLIA AT MIDNIGHT
By Fernando Lichti Barros – O Estado de São Paulo – 1974
Amid a torrent of imported, sentimental and inconsequent ballads the radio vomits daily, and when more and more new musicians are copying European and American bands, MALIKA is born in São Paulo. The band is formed by seven determined men who study Latin American folklore and extract a healthy result... Hector Costita (sax), Luiz Roberto (synthesizer), Lelo (piano), Jorge (bass), and Mauro, Olivier and Zé Eduardo (percussion) have adopted a philosophy inspired by the African word Malika, which means "creator"... Above all, they seek to escape from preestablished forms. Their purpose is to create the new... Maybe now Brazilian musicians, who are usually naive or badly informed, begin to be interested in such reachness right in front of their eyes.
